PASS PLUS LESSONS

PASS PLUS

Pass Plus is a course designed to develop and strengthen your basic skills. It is only for those who have passed their driving test. It is a minimum of 6 hours long without a test at the end. The course can only be taken under the supervision of an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) who is registered with the DVSA to give Pass Plus courses. However, it can be taken in your car, not necessarily in an instructor’s car. There is no rule on this. There are 6 modules for you to complete. These are:
  • Inner town/city driving
  • Night time driving
  • Rural roads and country driving
  • All weather driving
  • Dual Carriageways
  • Motorways
During the course, I will be marking you on your ability to deal will the topics. There are two levels we can mark you, ‘achieved’ and ‘exceeded’. Most of the time, achieved is standard, gaining the experience with input from me, whereas ‘exceeded’ is attained through complete independence and definitive decision making. The ability to show me that you are able to deal with situations faced on your own with minimal help from me.

Depending on where you live, time of year, and your availability with your hours, the structure of these lessons are worked out. You may live miles and miles away from the nearest town, therefore more rural roads can be driven, or for instance, you may only be able to have your lessons in the morning, so night time lessons are virtually impossible. We should always try to have some practical time for each module. It could be that we divide the hours up into blocks. You could have 6 individual hours, but not always effective or practical, or 3 blocks of 2hrs, or two 3 hour blocks. For modules such as motorway driving, if not practiced whilst learning I like to spend a good 3 hours on, developing skills whilst it gets dark or starts raining, or both, covering 2 or 3 modules at the same time.
Theory work is also a part of the course alongside the driving. It may be that unfortunately, certain modules can only be theory based. This would lead to you only obtaining an ‘achieved’ marking for that module. An example would be the all weather module and not having differing weathers to drive in, such as snow and fog.

At the end of each module I will fill in the relevant sections and we will both sign it, agreeing to the standards achieved. Once the course is completed, we both sign it, stating the number of hours tuition and I will send it off to the DVSA. They will send you a Pass Plus certificate within 2 weeks. This will have a certificate number on for which you can use to claim a cheaper insurance. This is another benefit for completing this course, but not the main reason.
